Day 2
We'd
been fishing most of the night, so we woke up around noon. We spent most
of the day just walking around, cooking fish and taking pictures. We tried
to fish, but fishing was much worse during the day. The worst mosquitoes
were early in the morning, but by noon it became pretty windy and they
almost disappeared..jpg)
If you are planning to camp on the Dalton, don't
forget to take some kind of stove with you. In most places it is difficult
to find good firewood, and when you go north to tundra you won't find any
firewood at all. We had a small propane stove with us, and it helped us a
lot.
We
left at about 6 pm, and gained very little ground this day. At first we
wanted to stop for a night at beautiful Grayling Lake (mile 150), but
there were too many mosquitoes over there and we couldn't find a good
place to camp. Besides, we had been told that this lake is pretty
shallow, so the fishing isn’t actually very good there. So we drove a
few miles north and stopped at South Fork Koyukuk River (mile 156).
